Clammy Ground-cherry (Physalis heterophylla)

Physalis heterophylla is native to eastern Canada and the United States. It grows on sandy or rocky soils in prairies, meadows, grassy clearing, woodlands, logged or burned areas, cultivated lands, roadsides, railroads, etc. Annual or perennial herb, up to 50 cm in height. Stems and leaves are densely pubescent; distinctive thick rhizomes that run horizontal to the stem. Leaves are alternate, ovate, 6-11 cm. Flowers are single, drooping, and tubular; five reticulated sepals and five fused pale-yellow petals with dark purple-brown spots on the inside; up to 10-12 flowers per branching stem. Fruit is a globose berry, yellow when ripe.
